Geography and Politics
Ghana, in West Africa, is bordered by the Ivory Coast to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. The word Ghana means “Warrior King” and is derived from the medieval Ghana Empire.
Ghana’s climate is tropical, being warm and comparatively dry along the southeast coast, hot and humid in the southwest and hot and dry in the north. The terrain is mostly low plains with a plateau in the south-central area.
Although the area of present-day Ghana has experienced many population movements, the native and major Akan ethnic group of South Ghana today were firmly settled by the 10th century. The constitution in Ghana divides powers among a president, parliament, cabinet, council of state, and an independent judiciary.
